Jane Drake

Jane, the third of four children, was born and raised in Toronto. When she was sixteen, her family moved to London, Ontario where she finished high school and attended Western University, graduating with a degree in History and English.

As a child, she loved exploring the outdoors, catching salamanders, frogs, and fairy shrimp. She played all kinds of sports and especially loved winter activities. She also enjoyed acting and singing. As a pre-teen, she discovered a love of books, her favorite ones being the Narnia series. Jane’s parents encouraged her to be observant, and to tell accurate and interesting stories. Her mother was an amateur artist and botanist; her father an avid birdwatcher. Jane’s sister Ann has always shared her knowledge and passion for nature and the environment.

Jane has lived in many places around the world, including Dublin, Ireland, and Paris, France where she attended the Cordon Bleu cooking school. Jane has taken numerous courses in continuing education, ranging from smocking, accounting, writing for the children’s market, and more recently, memoir and fiction writing.

Jane has always written to deconstruct what was going on in her life. Even with three small children, she found the time to take writing courses and went into partnership with her sister Ann in 1989. Rewilding: Giving Nature a Second Chance (Fall 2017) is the thirty-fourth book they’ve written together—and they are still friends! The Kids Cottage Book, written in 1993, is still one of the all-time, best-selling non-fiction books for kids. Their books have also won multiple awards and been translated into many languages. What Jane enjoys most about writing is looking for the offbeat details and stories that make a seemingly dry science subject exciting.

As a citizen and gardener, Jane has always chosen to keep things natural. Long before others took up the environmental cause, she was using natural pest controls, planting hummingbird and butterfly gardens, and repurposing “stuff.” Rewilding takes what comes naturally to a new level!
