Sandy Nichols

Sandy is originally from the Edmonton area but made her way to Calgary shortly after high school when she decided to attend the Alberta College of Art and Design (now the Alberta University of the Arts). She now teaches classes at her alma mater.

Before venturing into children’s book illustration, the majority of Sandy’s work for over 20 years was in editorial and advertising. Her illustrations have appeared in a wide variety of publications across North America and the UK. The first book she illustrated was Starring Lorenzo and Einstein Too. In 2014, she won a nationwide competition to illustrate the 40th anniversary board book of Dennis Lee’s iconic poem Alligator Pie along with Garbage Delight.  Later she went on to illustrate The Bagel King followed by her latest book, Tallulah Plays the Tuba (Fall 2019). The timing of this particular story was ideal because both her sons were in the school band at the time.

Sandy lives in Calgary with her husband, three teenagers, and a rag doll cat. When her son practiced his euphonium for band, the cat would run and hide, mortified.
